Volkl makes some of the most amazing skis around. Skis like the AC50, Gotama and Mantra have defined their categories for years. Last season though, things were feeling a little dated, sure the new Kenja and Kendo were great, but there wasn’t much new and it seemed like maybe Volkl was slowing down. Fortunately, that’s not the case, and Volkl offers their best line of skis ever this season. There are many familiar names in the line, but all have updated and ski better than ever.
The Mantra defined big mountain skis for many years, but last season it was showing its age as newer skis with rocker upped the performance ante. This season the Mantra is back in the game in a big way, thanks to a wider (98mm) waist and rocker in the tip. Gotama also got a makeover, but a subtler one. The “Goat” is a touch wider (107mm) now, and its rocker was tweaked making it more versatile than ever. Kendo was Volkl’s big news last season and returns this season unchanged; a great all mountain ski with a light feel, standard camber and plenty of life.
The big deal for Volkl this season is the new RTM (Ride the Mountain) skis that replace the much loved AC Unlimited line of carve skis. The RTM 84 received best carve ski awards from both Ski and Skiing magazines, and puts full length rocker on a carve ski.
Volkl upgraded their women’s line, and the changes generally mirror those on the men’s skis. Kiku (107mm) is remains a premier powder too, but has increased performance on hard snow. Aura (96mm) finally gets tip rocker and a bit more girth, putting her back into contention for best big mountain ski. Kenja (86mm) gets a new graphic, but is otherwise unchanged. Volk was probably wise not to mess with success here; Kenja is light lively and fun.
