K2

K2 is the best selling ski in the country. They make a simple line of versatile skis that strike the perfect balance of forgiveness and performance.

The men’s Apache series is best known for the ubiquitous Recon. The Recon may be the best 50/50 ski ever. It’s equally at home on the groomed or off, carving or bumping, soft snow or hard. Our favorite K2 though is the Outlaw. It has the same metal laminate construction as the Recon, but is 10mm wider, and has a more tapered side cut which works well in steep off piste skiing. The new Raider is essentially the Recon without the metal layers. It’s more forgiving and a bit livelier than The Recon, and a great ski to improve on. The Raider is our performance rental ski, so try it out for less than demo price. The late great Doug Coombs is honored with the worthy Coomba. It’s a powerful fat ski that is built for adventure. For the true powder hound, K2 has 2 reverse camber skis that are nothing short of incredible. The Pontoon may be the best powder ski ever, but is pretty hard to handle on the firm stuff. The Hellbent doesn’t float quite as much, but it’s not as scary as the Pontoon on hard snow.

K2’s T Nine series has defined women’s specific ski for some time now. For the ’07-’08 season, they offer the most complete selection ever. The super versatile and hugely popular Lotta Luv is too good to change, so it just gets a new cosmetic. The new Tough Luv is very well named. It has the same metal laminate construction as the Lotta Luv, but is 10 mm wider, and has less shape in the tail. This makes it a great ski for going fast in natural snow and steep terrain. The updated One Luv is really a totally new ski. It’s 6mm wider than last year, and is a great choice for the advanced skier looking to get off the groomed. The True Luv is still a forgiving versatile ski that has tons of performance at a great price. It is our ladies performance rental ski this season, so try it out. The new Phat Luv got fatter and is remains the premier ladies powder ski.

Some of our favorite K2s are in the Factory Team series. All of these skis are twin tips with very stout construction. They have double thick bases and edges, and are riveted tip and tail to prevent delamination. Vertical sidewalls are used to enable serious repairs, like blown and crushed edges. The Public Enemy is perhaps the best combination of performance, value, and durability on the market. It’s a seriously fun ski that works well all over the hill, and in the park. The girls all mountain twin is the versatile Missdemeaner. It’s slightly narrower than the PE, but shares its value and all mountain aptitude. Seth returns this year with a “mini rocker” that’s really a zero camber area in the forebody. This increases his ability to plane in powder, without affecting his performance on the groomed. Nancy returns unchanged, except for a new look. She still rules up top, and off piste.
