Ski Boots: The Good, the Bad and the Smelly

Boots are the most important piece of ski gear. Period. There is no other piece of equipment that can affect your experience on the slopes as your boots. A poorly fit or inappropriate boot can cause, pain, injury, fatigue, poor skiing stance, and smelly feet. OK, your feet are probably going to stink after a day on the slopes no matter what, but you get the idea. A good ski boot can be the difference between control all over the mountain, and feeling out of balance even on easy runs. A good ski boot can be the difference between sitting in the lodge while you friends are out having fun, and skiing strong all day.

How are your boots?

Bad Boots: I have to really crank down on the buckles to get control, than my feet hurt.

Good Boots: The buckles over my feet barely close, and my foot fills up the boot

Bad Boots: If I wear 2 pairs of sox they fit better.

Good Boots: I wear one pair of thin ski socks.

Bad Boots: I went one size bigger than my shoes.

Good boots: They are really snug; I can barely wiggle my toes at all.

Bad Boots: My toenails are black and bruised.

Good Boots: My toes touch the end of the boot, but they don’t hurt.

Bad Boots: My feet cramp.

Good Boots: I don’t bother to unbuckle them at lunch.

Bad Boots: My boots are very stiff, and my shins hurt at the end of the day.

Good Boots: I can flex my boots as needed to absorb and stay centered on my feet.

Bad Boots: My knees are stuck in a very flexed over the front of the boot. I feel like I can’t stand up, and my quads tire quickly.

Good Boots: The bones in my body are stacked tall and strong. I can stand up and flex gradually through the turn.

Bad Boots: It’s hard to get my skis on/off my edges.

Good Boots: I just roll little toe, big toe, and my skis start turning.

Bad Boots: They are white and I bought them in the 80’s.

Good boots: I spent over an hour in the shop, demoed a couple different pairs, and bought a custom foot beds too!

Hopefully this gives you an idea of how we like to fit boots. When you come to Kittredge to shop for boots, be ready to spend some time. Wear your thin synthetic or maybe wool ski socks. If you don’t have some, we will sell you an appropriate pair. This is important. If you own a custom foot bed or orthotic, bring it along. Bring your favorite pair of skis too. We encourage you to demo the boots, and your bindings will need to be adjusted. If you are getting new skis also, then now is a fine time to demo.

Footbeds & Bootfitting

Boot fitting takes time. Be prepared to spend well over an hour in the shop. Weekends and holidays can get very busy here in Mammoth. We are usually most busy from 2:30 to 6:30. If you can come in earlier, before 2pm we are usually not as busy. We stay open late, but if you come in half an hour before closing we may not be able to complete the fit.

Finding the right boot with the proper fit can be tedious and time consuming, but its well worth it. We look forward to seeing you and helping to maximize your ski experience.

It’s pretty rare that boots fit well out of the box. A supportive foot bed is the first step towards a personalized fit. Our foot beds range from a $40 off the shelf model to $150 for a full custom Superfeet Kork or Instaprint. We will recommend an appropriate foot bed, depending on your personal needs.
